Rising dark pop musician Gilska weaves a moody and mysterious
house track “Up Till 5,” reflecting on wanting to chase fleeting highs but
falling to numbing lows once the rush of partying fades.
With a melancholic feel offset by beats that get you grooving along, the
London-born, Sri Lankan-origin act crafts a minimal yet textured
soundscape of synth-tinged electronics and husky vocals.
Having come to life as a simple number written on piano, the track builds
up with layers of transportive instrumentals and contemplative song
writing.
On the track, Gilska comments: “It’s almost like being stuck in a loophole
of ending up in the club night after night not knowing why. Having a
slight addiction to partying to get that dopamine rush to feel something,
but slowly realizing night after night it’s not working. How the lights, the
drinks, and even the music sucks you in and you always end up feeling
that same numbness after a temporary high but you keep on dancing
anyway.”
Armed with the strength of her classical training and the musical DNA
courtesy of her grandfather – a pop star once upon a time in Sri Lanka –
Gilska who began composing melodies at the age of nine has found a
space for herself with her edgy yet soulful pop, carried by poignant
lyricism and entrancing vocals – and there’s no stopping her as she
steadily cements her place in music.
